Although it only lasted 10 turns the game had plenty of twists and turns with a Union victory in grasp on turn 7 that slipped away to a 7:5 victory for the Confederates. Although defeated, the Army of the Potomac did well having briefly gained Marye's Heights and giving the Rebs a tough run for their money on the left. The command restrictions imposed on the Union forces added an extra dimension to play and I may use the idea of ‘active’ and ‘inactive’ divisions again in future solo games.Strykerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14258922461691204362noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6450667691504878021.post-17034118918959620512020-08-07T07:45:00.000-07:002020-08-08T02:16:34.630-07:00Fredericksburg Solo - ScenarioFredericksburg is probably not a great choice for a
wargame for several reasons, firstly the size - it was the biggest ever battle on American soil (the only time the Confederates managed to field over 75,000
men) fought over a six-mile front. Secondly, the terrain, coupled with
Burnside's unimaginative deployment of the Union army, means there is little
room for manoeuvre. Thirdly, the battle had more in common with those of 1864
being a bloody one-sided affair.

That said, I have been wanting to try to game this
fascinating battle for some time as I felt that although it might be a bit dull
as a traditional game, it could possibly work well as a solo endeavour. Having
read in detail about the campaign I realised that although the attack on Marye’s
Heights was clearly folly, the Union had a real chance of success further to
their left which the generals failed to exploit.
Turn 15 was a night turn which meant I could re-dress the lines, bring on reinforcements and remove all shaken and broken markers returning units to good morale, I also allowed some limited SP recovery for units with 6SP’s or less.
The Confederates ended day one without taking Seven Pines so they started day two with a 1DEM handicap increased to 2DEM as they had 2 destroyed Brigades against 1 for the Union. This meant that the Federals had a small but significant advantage over the Rebels for day two.
The Confederate victory came slightly against the run of play and if I had finished the turn it is possible the Reb’s would also have reached their DEM level, however I felt that as they had taken the Seven Pines crossroads it was right to call the game in their favour.

The total SP losses were Confederates 89, Union 58. The most heavily engaged Confederate Division was R H Anderson’s veterans who lost 31 SP’s and had 2 Brigades destroyed (Kemper and Pickett). On the Union side Keyes Corps lost 29 out of 69 SP’s with one Brigade destroyed (Palmer), many of these casualties were incurred in the first few hours of the battle.Strykerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14258922461691204362noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6450667691504878021.post-27680731162220449302020-05-15T05:37:00.000-07:002020-05-15T05:37:31.624-07:00Seven Pines Solo Turns 7-12

The numbers in brackets on the OOB's are the starting strength points for each brigade, unusually in this fight the Confederate units are mostly stronger than those of the Union.
They are of course the iconic Twin Houses from the Seven Pines battlefield.

These buildings appear in a few photographs and drawings from the time and must have been a very noticeable landmark. I couldn’t work out what colour they were painted from the photos and I have seen models painted in both white and brown, but I opted for white.

There is no info on the Twin Houses that I could find and I wonder who lived there? Presumably two related families? The Twin Houses were demolished long ago, and a housing development now stands on the site they once occupied.Strykerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14258922461691204362noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6450667691504878021.post-33685436979672621652020-04-18T07:43:00.000-07:002020-04-18T07:43:19.957-07:00The of the Army of the PotomacI painted the figures for this Union Division six years ago and they have been waiting to be based ever since. This means they have waited longer to be mustered into my miniature Army of the Potomac than the time it took to fight the real war.

It brings the size of the army to 30 brigades of infantry organised into 10 Divisions, each with its own artillery battery and Command group. There are 5 brigades of cavalry represented both mounted and dismounted, and an army artillery reserve of 4 batteries. There are over 1,300 figures in total.

I can categorically state that this army, started over 35 years ago, is now complete.
The game was surprisingly good fun considering it was played solo and it was good to get these 6mm figures back in play. There were a few things that I learnt that may be applicable to any future games -

1. The heavily wooded terrain made movement slow so it would be a good idea to allow increased moves in similar scenarios (e.g. Chickamauga or The Wilderness)
2. The woods also made artillery very difficult to use to any effect although this may have been realistic in this scenario, possible idea is to allow a battery to fire in woods on a roll of 4,5 or 6
3. The command rules just don’t work for a solo game as I very quickly lost track of who was who, this wasn’t helped by the Confederate deployment in this scenario which was successive lines of corps. I need to simplify this for any further games.
4. This particular scenario was stacked too much against the Confederates, if I played it again I would say that any broken Union brigades have to rout to Pittsburg Landing before they could start to rally. This would give the Rebels more of an advantage early on and also be historically more accurate.Strykerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14258922461691204362noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6450667691504878021.post-92080979970382269232020-02-15T05:31:00.002-08:002020-02-15T05:31:40.988-08:00Shiloh Solo Turns 10-13

The resulting haul of VP’s has swung the battle to a Union Minor Victory and Lee has decided to call it a day.

It was a hard fought and very disjointed game from my perspective full of tactical blunders due largely to the frustration of not being able to properly concentrate my army. Dave’s move to take Williamsport meant that my forces became strung out as they attempted to respond to the threat and nowhere could I bring my superior numbers to bear, in particular my artillery.

Dave fought a tight tactical game but made two blunders that cost him victory. Firstly he allowed Wade Hampton’s cavalry brigade to become surrounded and destroyed early in the game handing me a much needed VP and morale boost. Secondly he kept D H Hill at Williamsport rather than either move towards Hagerstown (which would have forced me to send Burnside after him) or bring him directly south on my flank.

A great game but neither of us will be winning any prizes for generalship for this one!

It looks as if I will have to wear them down by attrition as my infantry are having a hard job taking them on by direct assault.
Dave has mounted a strong attack from the direction of Downsville presumably with the aim of trying to relieve D H Hill at Williamsport or at least draw my reserves away. However, I had already sent two divisions from Mansfield’s corps south with the idea of preventing such a move and a new fight has developed along the line of a stream south of the Otho Williams farm.
The Rebel guns have continued to cause heavy casualties and it has become clear that any assault by my infantry would have had little chance of success. The Confederates are also disengaging and both sides are starting to shift troops further west.
Meanwhile Burnside has started to attack D H Hill’s force at Williamsport and I have sent Mansfield up to support him. I also took the decision to order Pleasonton to cross the Potomac at Falling Waters and head northeast to cut off the enemy’s path of retreat from Williamsport.
Under cover of darkness he has concentrated the Divisions of Anderson and McLaws to the north of Tilghmanton and launched a dawn attack into the flank of Sumner’s men catching them in column as they headed towards Jones Crossroads to join up with Franklin and Porter.
Turn 37 is the first of the night moves for the night of 12-13 September. Visibility is reduced to just one hex and turns now represent one hour (rather than 20 minutes) troops that move suffer quite heavy fatigue that reduces their combat effectiveness. As a result I’ve decided to halt all movement until dawn on the 13th as I doubt that Dave will risk any major movements either.
The VP chart at the end of turn 37.

The current VP score stands slightly in my favour but Dave has managed to slowly whittle this away since the drubbing of his cavalry on the Smoketown Road. Although I have an advantage in numbers the quality of the Confederate troops means that they still pose a very serious threat and trying to keep my troops concentrated remains a priority.Strykerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14258922461691204362noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6450667691504878021.post-14628410669811995782015-01-01T06:40:00.000-08:002015-01-03T01:54:20.734-08:005.00pm 12 Sept 1862 – turn 28The Rebels are forcing the ford at Williamsport but they appear to be in no more than divisional strength and Pleasonton’s horse artillery are harassing them as they cross the river. Dave’s original plan may have been to press on to Hagerstown but I think now he is more likely to try and send this isolated force south to rejoin Lee.
The Rebels are crossing the ford at Williamsport but they must be way behind schedule due to Pleasonton's delaying action!

This seems likely because the Confederates around the area of Jones Crossroads are disengaging and attempting to shift to the northwest. To counter this I have ordered Hookers corps west with Burnside following him to attempt to stop the enemy passing by our right flank.
Meanwhile Sumner, Franklin and Mansfield are reforming their divisions to the east of Tilghmanton. Their various regiments and brigades have become somewhat muddled up during the pursuit of the Rebels from Sharpsburg and I will need them properly organised ready for action in the morning.
Meanwhile the forces of both sides are continuing to gather in the area of Jones Crossroads and this now seems likely to be the location of a major battle. My corps are too widely dispersed to mount an attack today so I will spend the remaining hours of daylight concentrating them and shortening our lines with the idea of an assault tomorrow.
The men of Sumner’s and Mansfield’s corps have had a major success on the Smoketown road where they isolated and destroyed Wade Hampton’s cavalry brigade. JEB Stuart will be all out for revenge after this humiliation and I will have to keep a close eye on the rear areas of our battle line as we continue to deploy.Strykerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14258922461691204362noreply@blogger.com0
